Hello friends of LIS !

This is a new academic year beginning for our LIS information monitoring. The same way we’ve been doing for Book and Library History, the presentation of our LIS blogposts is changing a bit. From now on, we are picking a few items to outline for you. Please, tell us your feedbacks in comments or on twitter ! Une nouvelle année universitaire commence pour notre veille en SIB. De même que pour l’histoire du livre et des bibliothèques, la présentation de nos billets SIB change un peu. À partir de maintenant, nous choisissons dans notre veille quelques éléments que nous vous détaillons. Dites-nous ce que vous pensez de cette nouvelle formule en commentaire ou sur twitter ! If you’re speaking german, you will be interested in the Berliner Bibliothekswissenschaftliches Kolloquium, the Berlin LIS Seminar, which takes place every tuesday from october to february in the Berlin Institut für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft. And if you can’t make it to Berlin, you will still find on the website written abstracts and full audio registration (including the slides) of the lectures ! Have you heard of SATKAL ? This Indian Trust founded by Jagindar Singh Ramdev, First Deputy Librarian in Chandigarh, to perpetuate the memory of his late wife, who was also a graduate in library science, is now promoting LIS in India by giving training programmes, lectures, seminars, workshops, scholarships, medals for students, etc. But before all, the SATKAL Trust is famous in all India for its four major awards :  National Librarian Award, Woman Librarian Award, Young Librarian Award, and School Librarian Award. Avez-vous entendu parler de SATKAL ? Cette fondation indienne a été créée par Jagindar Singh Ramdev, premier bibliothécaire adjoint à Chandigarh, en mémoire de son épouse, qui était elle aussi diplomée de bibliothéconomie. Elle promeut dorénavant les SIB en Inde grâce à des programmes de formation, des conférences, séminaires, workshops, bourses, médailles pour les étudiants, etc. Mais la fondation SATKAL est surtout connue en Inde pour les quatre principaux prix qu’elle décerne : National Librarian Award, Woman Librarian Award, Young Librarian Award et School Librarian Award. In these times of economic crisis, lots of our libraries have to reconsider their fundings. Even digital libraries need to think on how to find out a sustainable economic model for their activities. If you’ve got some experience in this topic, or if you made some research about it, please feel free to answer the special edition of The Bottom Line call for papers (Volume 28, Issue 1 of 2015). En ces temps de crise économique, de nombreuses bibliothèques ont dû revoir leurs modalités de financement. Même les bibliothèques numériques doivent réfléchir à un modèle économique durable pour leurs activités. Collections digitisation is nowadays a central topic for lots of libraries. The Support Action Centre of Competence in Digitisation (SUCCEED), supported by the European Union and coordinated by Universidad de Alicante, promotes the take up and validation of research results in mass digitisation. Its final conference, presenting the results of the project, will take place on November 28th in the French National Library (Paris). De nos jours, la numérisation des collections est devenue un sujet central pour de nombreuses bibliothèques. Le Centre d’Action Support en faveur des Compétences de Numérisation (SUCCEED en anglais), soutenu par l’Union Européenne et porté par l’Universidad de Alicante, promeut les initiatives et valide les résultats de recherche sur la numérisation de masse. Sa conférence finale, qui présentera les résultats du projet, se tiendra le 28 novembre à la Bibliothèque nationale de France (Paris). Last but not least, we librarians find generally it quite difficult not to be attracted by the “Wikipedia phenomenon”. Lots of libraries already built partnerships with the famous collaborative encyclopedia. Still, the options available for libraries to engage with Wikipedia have only increased in the last years. On October 27th, Dorothy Howard, Wikipedian-in-Residence and Open Data Fellow at the Metropolitan New-York Library Council, will hold the first of three webcast series. The live program, then the registred video will be available on YouTube. If you want to know more about it : http://metro.org/events/562/.

Enfin, nous autres bibliothécaires avons généralement du mal à ne pas nous passionner pour le “phénomène Wikipedia”. De nombreuses bibliothèques ont d’ores et déjà bâti des partenariats avec la fameuse encyclopédie collaborative. Pourtant, les possibilités offertes aux bibliothèques pour s’associer avec Wikipedia n’ont fait que croître dans les dernières années.
