ARL Standing Committee Elections – sixth candidate statement

Sixth candidate statement: Tiiu Tarkpea

IFLA Standing Committee elections are currently underway, and the ARL Standing Committee is excited to be welcoming new members.  We have invited our candidates to submit short biographies so that those of you who are voting members will have some background in making your selections.

I am a Data Librarian in University of Tartu (UT) Library, Estonia. In case I have the opportunity to work in ARL Standing Committee I would like to contribute in diverse fields of Open Science (OS): policy, the role of libraries in OS, research data management liaison, support, services and data literacy courses. It is worth to share the experience how to build these activities up from zero point involving all stakeholders and therefore support academic libraries in their new role. Fostering  cooperation on OS in Baltic region enables to bring broader knowledge to the table for the best of all.

Taking part in other professional organizations’ (LIBER, RDA, DataCite, COAR) activities regarding OS I can see bringing these actions together with IFLA.

Currently I am a member of IFLA Subject Analysis and Access Standing Committee (2013-2017) as I have worked as subject indexer and a head of department of Subject Analysis in UT Library. At this time we developed Estonian Thesaurus, a multi-lingual controlled vocabulary, in cooperation with libraries of Consortium of Estonian Libraries Network.

As a Standing Committee member I have worked in program committees several times.

ARL Standing Committee Elections – fifth candidate statement

Fifth candidate statement: Adetoun Oyelude

IFLA Standing Committee elections are currently underway, and the ARL Standing Committee is excited to be welcoming new members.  We have invited our candidates to submit short biographies so that those of you who are voting members will have some background in making your selections.

The last seventeen years, I have experienced working in an academic library, Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria; and before that, five years of working in a Special library, the Women’s Research and Documentation Centre (WORDOC) library in Nigeria. It is a plus for me that I can also contribute to library education by teaching cataloguing and classification in the Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies of my University. Being a Visiting Scholar at the LoveJoy Library, Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville (SIUE) for eighteen weeks in 2008, and also attending academic conferences and workshops worldwide has given me international exposure.

Though currently in the Organizing Committee of the Women, Information Libraries Special Interest Group (WILSIG) of IFLA for the 2017 IFLA Conference, I have never worked in an ARL Committee. I therefore look forward to working and committing my energy to serving in all capacities that I can, given the opportunity. I enjoy working collaboratively to achieve developmental goals and would be able to further connections and collaborations of Africa with the rest of the world, and also bring ideas forward to make ARL more vibrant. ARL Standing Committee Elections – fourth candidate statement

Fourth candidate statement: Raymond Pun

IFLA Standing Committee elections are currently underway, and the ARL Standing Committee is excited to be welcoming new members.  We have invited our candidates to submit short biographies so that those of you who are voting members will have some background in making your selections.

I am honored to be nominated for ARL Standing Committee. My professional background is diverse and encompasses public-research, academic and international libraries. I started my library career at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of The New York Public Library where I provided research services in the humanities, social sciences, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. After this role, I became an academic librarian at New York University Shanghai in the People’s Republic of China. For two years, I worked in a team to build the foundation of the library for the first Sino-American joint venture university focusing on scholarly activities in GIS, digital scholarship and data management services.

Currently, I am the first year student success librarian at Fresno State in California where I coordinate first year information literacy and student engagement programs across campus. At the IFLA level, I have been recently involved in the Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning (CPDWL) Section in planning for WLIC workshops and supporting social media communications efforts (2016).

Personally, I am multilingual with a multicultural background and have established contacts with academic librarians and archivists from all over the world from Bhutan to Cuba to Australia. I believe I can bring a wealth of knowledge, new perspectives and activities for the ARL Section and IFLA-at-large. I am particularly interested in promoting social justice, diversity and inclusivity in academic/research librarianship. I would be honored to advance ARL’s scholarly agendas and collaborations.

ARL Standing Committee Elections – third candidate statement.

Third candidate statement: Adelaida Ferrer

IFLA Standing Committee elections are currently underway, and the ARL Standing Committee is excited to be welcoming new members.  We have invited our candidates to submit short biographies so that those of you who are voting members will have some background in making your selections.

Adelaida Ferrer I was born in Barcelona in 1966. I studied the Diploma in Library Science and Documentation at the University of Barcelona and I have a degree in Documentation from the Carlos III University of Madrid. I am currently working on my doctoral thesis on the use of the EFQM model in Spanish university libraries. I work in the Library of the University of Barcelona for 28 years, in different techniques from the technical library, librarian, responsible for a technical unit, responsible for the library of entrepreneurs and finally director of the CRAI. Since 2009, I am director of the Center for Resources for Learning and Research (http://crai.ub.edu/) of the University of Barcelona. The CRAI has 17 libraries and 7 technical units that offer support services to the research and teaching of the entire university community.

I am evaluator in the model of excellence of the European quality management of the foundation, with experience in the evaluation in university libraries. Member of the Management Club of Excellence. He taught in management of information and cataloging units at the University of Barcelona and at the Open University of Catalonia. I am interested in quality assessment and library management issues (strategic, communication, marketing plans and everything related to user care and satisfaction). I have been an alternate delegate in the EMEA Regional Council of OCLC since 2016. In 2014, I joined the IFLA Academic and Research Standing Committee, representing REBIUN, the network of Spanish university libraries. For me, it has been an incredible opportunity to learn about experiences from other university libraries and to be able to import them into the reality of our libraries. The professional exchange involved in belonging to an IFLA committee is highly satisfactory.

I would like to have the support of the voters in order to have a second term within the committee that allows me to go deeper into the new issues and all the time, to get all the experiences that led one out in REBIUN and particularly in the University of Barcelona
