Our friends at CILIP have announced a shortlist of three outstanding library partnership projects for the Libraries Change Lives Awards.

All three initiatives are inspirational and provide a great deal of food for thought.

Philanthropist and publisher William Sieghart will announce the winner of this year’s award on Saturday 20 September at CILIP’s Big Day conference in Bristol.

Organised by the Public Libraries Section of IFLA, in collaboration with CILIP and the Society of Chief Librarians in England, this satellite conference is hosted by the new Library of Birmingham and provides an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in the public library world in the largest and most iconic public library in Europe. In a rapidly changing environment join us to explore and examine the opportunities surrounding public libraries.

This exciting two-day programme includes keynote presentations from:
• Brian Gambles, Assistant Director, Birmingham City Council (Library of Birmingham)
• Corinne Hill, Library Director, Chattanooga Public Library
• Laura Cole, Special Projects Coordinator, Bibliotech, San Antonio, Texas
• Jens Thorhauge, Independent Senior Adviser and Consultant, Denmark
• Janene Cox, Past President, Society of Chief Librarians, England

Delegates will also have the opportunity to; hear from over 20 speakers from the UK, Europe, USA, Australia and China; take a tour of the largest public library Europe; join us for the conference drinks reception, including CILIP’s Public and Mobile Library’s Group annual award ceremony; and meet and network with colleagues from around the world.

Retired teacher Antonio La Cava promotes reading in the rural Basilicata region of Italy by driving his bookmobile around the local villages. La Cava announces his arrival with the sound of an organ and is often greeted by crowds of eager children.

Från CILIP’S Public Libraries and Mobile Group’s nyhetsbrev i juni kommer denna härliga historia:
Antonio La Cava, en pensionerad lärare och läsfrämjare,  åker runt med sin bokbil i byarna på landsbygden i Basilicataregionen i Italien. La Cava annonserar sin ankomst med ljudet av orgelmusik och välkomnas av mängder med ivriga barn.

Aus dem Juni-Newsletter der CILIP-Gruppe “Public Libraries and Mobile” stammen dieses wunderbare Bild mit der folgenden Geschichte: Der pensionierte Lehrer Antonio La Cava engagiert sich für die Leseförderung in der Basilicata-Region Italiens, indem er mit seinem Buchmobil durch die Dörfer der Region fährt. La Cava tut seine Ankunft mit dem Ton einer Orgel kund und wird häufig von einer Traube aufgeregter Kinder begrüßt.

Speakers have been handpicked from leading practitioners around the globe, and the Public Libraries Section of IFLA look forward to meeting you in Birmingham this August (12-13).

Library Celebrations in February

Already January is disappearing fast and February is almost upon us with two big library celebrations that we’re aware of (we’d love to hear of any others).

In the United Kingdom on Saturday 8 February they’ll be celebrating National Libraries Day, a culmination of a week’s worth of celebrations in school, college, university, workplace and public libraries across the UK. The website has some great ideas and inspiring stories.

For many people 14 Febrarury signals Valentine’s Day but in Australia it’s also Library Lovers Day!, a day for everyone to share their  love of  libraries. Not everyone receives flowers or chocolates on 14 February but everyone can enjoy their library.

Public Libraries Satellite – Call for Proposals

The IFLA Public Libraries Section is now calling for proposals for its 2014 Satellite Meeting in Birmingham, UK 12-13 August.

The Conference theme Public Library Futures in a global digital world? provides great scope for presentations the on the  themes of the public library as a physical and a virtual space in the digital age and the public library as an economic driver that helps to regenerate and build communities.

Submissions will be accepted until 17 February 2014 … so get started!

Meet Kirsten McCormick this year’s recipient of the Travelling Librarian Award. The Award is offered by the English-Speaking Union (ESU) and The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and builds the relationship between library and information professionals in the United Kingdom and their counterparts in the United States and across the Commonwealth. The recipient completes a 2-3 week study tour to examine a subject of professional interest, in order to share learning and good practice with colleagues at home and abroad. For the first time in its history, in 2013 the annual award is open to applications from UK librarians to visit any country in the Commonwealth. Continue reading
