Open Source moving forward

IFLA IT Section has been intensely engaged with Open Source in the last two weeks. In Rome,  the Gobal Centr for ICT in Parliament worked with the ICT Section and the Parliamentary Libraries Section to present the workshop Leveraging Technology for Parliamentary Libraries and Research Services.

During this workshop Dr Balnaves presented Koha in a hands-on manner using a virtualised Koha image on Suse Linux, and presented a model for Enterprise Open Source architectures for libraries.  Flavio Zeni presented Dspace, again using a virtualised image running on Ubunto.

These are exciting times for Open Source in Libraries.  The open source options are now robust and well accepted by many libraries.  More work is needed.  In the IFLA Congress in Milan the IT Section will be hosting a meeting to discuss forward directions in supporting open source adoption and methods for regional Open Source support (Tuesday 8am in the White Room 1 – all welcome).

Edmund Balnaves – ITS Information Officer
