Taste of Controversy

November 16th, 2009

I’ve had a look at few sessions today and will report later, but for now here’s a mention of some controversy which is currently going on at the IGF. The BBC has the full story here but in brief: UN officials apparently took down posters for the new book on Internet censorship ‘Access Controlled’ that was being launched by the Open Net Initiative. This is undoubtedly connected to mention of China’s Great Firewall and Internet censorship in the promotion for the book. There has been a bad YouTube film of the incident circulating, and everyone seems to be talking about it. As Ron Deibert from the Open Net Initiative (quoted in the BBC article) says “If we are not allowed to discuss topics such as internet censorship, surveillance and privacy at a forum on internet governance, then what is the point of the IGF?”
