Mid-term in Malmo

image

The Public Library Section’s mid-term meeting in beautiful Malmo, Sweden started at lunch time yesterday and we’re off to a flying start with a very successful first meeting behind us and a full program ahead of us. It’s always great to catch up with section members and today we will be joined by colleagues from across the Nordic countries and also Italy.

We had the chance to visit the wonderful Malmo Public Library and Garaget, an old bus garage that has been transformed into an exciting community space.

The average February temperature in Malmo, Sweden may be be a cool 7 degrees  but we know that those visiting the Public Libraries Section Mid-Term meeting  26 February – 1 March will be assured of a warm welcome. Our colleagues Anette Mjöberg, Pirkko Lindberg and Leikny Indergaard  have developed a comprehensive program for the Section’s Mid-Term meeting in Malmö, Sweden and Tårnby/Copenhagen, Denmark.

There will opportunities to hear about the latest developments from around the world, visit some great libraries, provide input into the Section’s strategic direction and take advantage of great networking opportunities.

A Salute to Paris

From 3-5 May members of the Public Library Standing Committee were in Paris for the mid term meeting. What a warm welcome that beautiful city and our hosts extended to us. Committee member Annie Dourlent had arranged a rich program and we were able to visit three wonderful libraries during our stay:

  • Bibliothèque Marguerite Duras
  • Bibliothèque Louise Michel
  • Bibliothèque publique d’information.

In our meetings we discussed (among other things):

  • the session Exploring an e-book future for the WLIC Congress in Singapore that the Public Libraries Section is co-hosting with Metropolitan Libraries
  • the results of our survey on the words you’d use to describe a public library
  • our satellite for the 2014 WLIC Congress
  • our strategic direction.

Needless to say we also enjoyed the culinary delights that this beautiful city has to offer.

Our thanks to Annie for all the hard work in pulling the weekend together and for the library staff who gave us such interesting and engaging tours of their facilities.
