Dear readers,

It’s that time of year! Several institutions have opened up inscriptions for summer programs on book and printing history. In the following blog, we’ll give you the scoop about these programs and some resources for the historian, the librarian and the bibliophile.

Nous arrivons au moment de l’année encore où plusieurs institutions ont ouvert des inscriptions pour l’école d’été. Il y a plusieurs qui offrent des séminaires éclairants pour l’histoire du livre et de l’imprimerie. Dans le blog suivant, nous vous donnerons le scoop de ces programmes et quelques ressources pour l’historien, le bibliothécaire et le bibliophile.

As well as the intensive courses in palaeography and manuscript studies hosted by The London International Palaeography Summer School (as noted in a previous blog), June hosts another program with the Book History Workshop at Lyon. The workshop is offering 3 courses in the fields of book and printing history: Paper and watermarks as bibliographical evidence (taught in English), Medieval Bookbindings (in French), and the History and Techniques of European Prints from the 15th to 18th centuries (in French). These courses, given simultaneously, are from June 22nd to 25th.

En plus des cours intensifs de la paléographie et des études de manuscrit organisés par The London International Palaeography Summer School (comme indiqué dans un blog précédent), juin accueille un autre programme avec l’Institut d’Histoire du Livre à Lyon. L’institut offre 3 cours dans les domaines de livre et histoire de l’imprimerie : Papier et Filigranes comme indices bibliographiques (enseignement en anglais), Techniques et Matériaux des reliures médiévales (en français), et Chemins et Techniques de l’estampe européenne du XVe au XVIIIe siècles (en français). Ces cours donnés en parallèle sont du 22  au 25 juin.

From the 7th to 11th of July, Biblissima Summer School at the Médiathèque d’Orléans will offer classes exploring the issues surrounding the act of cataloguing and digitalizing the incunabla. These courses use physical bibliography to illuminate the history of these rare books as well as their future.

Du 7 au 11 juillet, l’école d’été Biblissima à la Médiathèque d’Orléans offre des classes explorant les enjeux autour du catalogage et de la numérisation des incunables. Ces cours utilisent la bibliographie matérielle pour illuminer l’histoire de ces livres rares ainsi que leur avenir.

Finally, the International Institut for Restoration and Preservation Studies at San Gemini is offering two programs from July 13th to August 7th. The first is Restoration of Paper in Books and Archival Documents; the second is Book Binding and Restoration. All academic activities are held in English.

Le premier est la Restauration de Papier dans des Livres et des Documents Archivistiques ; le deuxième est la Reliure et la Restauration. Toutes les activités universitaires sont tenues en anglais.

In the mean time, there are several databases which help to unveil the mysteries hidden in the print: BaTyR, a database of typography used during the Rennaissance, and Maguelone and Fleuron, databases of typographic ornaments during the 18th century.

Entre-temps, il y a plusieurs bases de données qui aident à dévoiler les mystères cachés dans le texte : BaTyR, une base de typographie utilisée pendant le Rennaissance, et Maguelone et Fleuron, les bases d’ornements typographiques pendant le XVIIIe siècle.
