ARL Standing Committee Elections – sixth candidate statement

Sixth candidate statement: Tiiu Tarkpea

IFLA Standing Committee elections are currently underway, and the ARL Standing Committee is excited to be welcoming new members.  We have invited our candidates to submit short biographies so that those of you who are voting members will have some background in making your selections.

I am a Data Librarian in University of Tartu (UT) Library, Estonia. In case I have the opportunity to work in ARL Standing Committee I would like to contribute in diverse fields of Open Science (OS): policy, the role of libraries in OS, research data management liaison, support, services and data literacy courses. It is worth to share the experience how to build these activities up from zero point involving all stakeholders and therefore support academic libraries in their new role. Fostering  cooperation on OS in Baltic region enables to bring broader knowledge to the table for the best of all.

Taking part in other professional organizations’ (LIBER, RDA, DataCite, COAR) activities regarding OS I can see bringing these actions together with IFLA.

Currently I am a member of IFLA Subject Analysis and Access Standing Committee (2013-2017) as I have worked as subject indexer and a head of department of Subject Analysis in UT Library. At this time we developed Estonian Thesaurus, a multi-lingual controlled vocabulary, in cooperation with libraries of Consortium of Estonian Libraries Network.

As a Standing Committee member I have worked in program committees several times.
